The Difference between Good and Evil

We know it when we see it, right?  We can pick out evil, no problem.  I mean, evil comes in the form of ugliness and filth. Or maybe violence and anger. Either way, it’s pretty easy to spot.

Unless of course, you’re the one who’s evil.

And then things get a little sticky because it’s you, right? You’re evil.

That’s not an easy thing to accept and this is right where the heroine of Clutch, the first book in the I Am Just Junco series, finds herself.

Junco is evil.  She knows she’s evil and she’s got the past to prove it.  A past she whole-heartedly chooses to forget.  She clings to the emptiness in her mind like a nightdog clings to the night.

But she’s also someone’s only hope. Almost a savior, if you will.

Sorta sucks, right?  I mean, on the one hand you’re evil.  100% good-for-almost-nothing-but-bad-stuff evil.  But on the other hand, some fellow evil being sees you as the answer to all his problems.

Now here’s the bigger issue.

All those people who see you as evil?  Well, they’re not any better that the ones who know they’re evil.  They’ve committed heinous crimes, heck, they even trained you to be your little evil self.

So, let’s recap.  You’re evil. You know you’re evil.

The people everyone says are evil, they’re evil too.

The people who say their not evil – also evil.

So who’s the good guy in all this?  Surely we can find the good guy, right?

Well, good luck with that.  Because good and evil can have many shades and sometimes the good guy is the lesser of three evils.

And this is Junco’s struggle. In this series Junco asks herself quite a few questions and one of them is “who is us and who is them?”  Whose side am I on?  Who’s the good guy and who’s the bad guy? Who can I trust to keep me on my one true path?

Believe it or not, Junco has a pretty firm relationship with her God.  She’s a believer and she’s not too proud to pray for help when she needs it, but of course, she’s not so keen on living by the rules either. So she struggles with her dual nature a lot.  In fact, this is one of the main underlying themes of the entire I Am Just Junco series.

It would be very easy to write Junco off as a cold-hearted killer, because she absolutely is.

But she know the difference between good and evil and in her heart she knows, no matter what she turns out to be, this is her path in life and she’s gonna meet her end with courage.  If there’s one thing Junco really wants, it’s to fulfill her one true purpose.  And she has every intention of following her heart straight to the apocalypse, whether she’s the bad guy or not, she’s been trained to do one thing and only one thing.

Complete her mission.

Junco’s story is a lot of things but one thing it isn’t, is simple.  She’s got her reasons for who she is and the way she acts, but she never blames her decisions on others.  She takes full responsibility for her actions.

Clutch is the first book in a five book series and in this book we find Junco on the cusp of discovering the truth about who and what she really is.

What you don’t get in the first book is the true nature of the problem she’s facing, but since we’re sharing I’ll let you in on a secret…

The End of Days are coming and Junco’s blowing the trumpets.

Welcome to the angel apocalypse. Welcome to I Am Just Junco.

Book Descriptions

Clutch
Book One I Am Just Junco
By J.A. Huss

BLURB

In 2152 the avian race is on Earth looking for something stolen from them decades ago – their genetics.  At the center of the search lies the Rural Republic; a small backwards farming country with high hopes of military domination and a penchant for illegal bioengineering.

19 year old Junco Coot is the daughter of the Rural Republic’s ranking commander. She’s the most foul-mouthed, wildly unpredictable and ruthless sniper the Rural Republic has ever trained.  But when her father’s death sparks a trip into forbidden places, she triggers events that will change everything she knows to be true.

As an elite avian military officer, Tier’s mission is to destroy the bioengineering projects, kill Commander Coot’s daughter, and return home immediately. There’s just one problem. Junco isn’t who she claims to be.

With no one to trust, not even herself, Junco must confront the secrets of her past and accept her place in the future, or risk losing herself completely.

Fledge
Book Two

Junco Coot can’t even remember her trip off Earth; she was too busy being morphed into her new avian body.  But reality hits her hard when she wakes up to find her new life is not what she expected. Not even close. Tier is on trial for disobeying his commander’s kill order and only Junco seems to care.

In most places the avian coming-of-age Fledge ritual would be nothing more than mass murder, but here in the capital city of Amelia, it’s called growing up. Junco has no choice; either fight to the death to prove her worth or get sent back to Earth in the hands of her enemies.

Her new military team is hostile, her body is being taken over by an illicit artificial intelligence, the avian president wants her dead, and her only friend is a ten-year old throwaway boy.

On a foreign habitat, in a foreign culture, and surrounded by people she can’t trust or count on, Junco must find a way to save herself and Tier without losing her immortal soul in the process.

Flight
Book 3

Escape from Earth. Check.

Morph into an avian body. Check.

Survive Fledge and Deliverance, soul intact. Check.

Bring her Siblings back to Amelia and restore the avian race? Not so fast, darlin’.

There’s a new twist on an old prophecy and this one brings the End of Days. Junco must make a choice, but the choices all confirm her only worth is tied up in killing.

Lucan has secrets. Secrets that will make the Stag Camp look like playschool. And the lies are flowing like a mountain river during spring thaw. But he needs Junco to cooperate just a little bit longer or it all falls apart.

The Siblings on Earth are waiting for the Seventh to return and pull their clutch together. But Earth has secrets too -- secrets that change everything.

Junco has survived against impossible odds, but the cost of survival is higher than she ever imagined. Luck is about to catch up with Junco Coot and her debt must be paid.

About The Author
J. A. Huss never took a creative writing class in her life. Some would say it shows. Others might cut her some slack. She did however, get educated and graduated from Colorado State University with a B.S. in Equine Science. She had grand dreams of getting a Ph.D. but while she loves science, she hated academia and settled for a M.S. in Forensic Toxicology from the University of Florida.

She went on to write science curriculum for homeschoolers and now runs a successful home business that creates and offers online science unit studies. When she’s not writing science curriculum or fiction, she works as a farm inspector, traveling the Eastern Plains of Colorado in variety of environmentally friendly vehicles that never have four-wheel drive, so when she gets stuck in the mud in said vehicles, she has to beg for assistance from anyone who will help her. She is not bitter about that at all.

She’s always packing heat and she is owned by two donkeys, five dogs, more chickens and ducks than she can count, and of course, the real filthy animals, her kids. The I Am Just Junco series was born after falling in love with the ugliest part of Colorado and the Rural Republic is based on the area of the state she currently resides in, minus the mutants, of course.

Debbie Dee's Guest Post

Many thanks to Marissa for inviting me on her blog today! With Halloween lurking around the corner I can’t help but notice all the villainous costumes in stores. With the exception of a ten year old boy who wants to be Darth Maul because his lightsaber is “way cooler” than Han Solo’s, why are villain costumes so fun? What is it about the “bad guys” that make them so memorable?

My favorite stories have villains who aren’t purely evil, but who believe their actions are justified for one reason or another. Perhaps they rob a bank to pay a parent’s debt, or hold a government office hostage to clear their name. However erroneous their motivations, if the author can evoke some level of empathy from the reader, the villains not only become more interesting, they become terrifying.

The Phantom from Phantom of the Opera is a creepy, stalker who wrecks havoc on an opera house for no apparent reason other than because he can. It is easy to hate him. That is, until we learn that as a child he was mocked for his disfigured appearance and thrown into a freak show. Suddenly, we understand the reason behind his insanity and our emotional heartstrings are tugged just enough to make us wonder what we would do in his situation.
Two Face from Batman Returns is another example of a disfiguration sending someone to dark extremes. He is a stand-up guy, leader in the community, fighter for good…until his face is blown half-off. You can’t help but feel bad for the guy, and because you know exactly how far this man has fallen, and how much he has lost, he becomes a more interesting villain.

What about the Wicked Witch of the West from The Wizard of Oz? Did she have a good enough to reason to fly off the handle? Her sister was not only killed by a farm girl, but a bunch of little people coined a catchy tune about it. All she wanted was revenge for her sister’s murder and to get her shoes back. Revenge is a powerful motivation for villains – Iago from Othello, Chillingsworth from The Scarlet Letter, and even Captain Hook from Peter Pan.

My favorite villains are those motivated by love. I’ll admit, Brendan Frasier was not the one I rooted for in The Mummy. No, I drooled rooted for Imhotep, the wayward priest whose sole motivation was to be reunited with his love, Anck Su Namun. How romantic is that!?

Healthcliff from Emily Bronte’s Wuthering Heights is another villain who goes to the extreme for love, but in his case, he torments the family of the object of his affection. He is cruel and nasty, and yet we sympathize with him because we too have felt the pains of unrequited love. Although guys, take note, the best way to a woman’s heart is not by forcing her daughter to marry your son. It didn’t work for Heathcliff, and it probably won’t work for you.

In The Last Witch, I tried to create villains who would not only anger my readers, but would give them something with which they could identify. Jealousy, patriotism, love, loyalty, fear - all those wonderful emotions that have the potential to push us over the edge. We can only hope that they don’t!
Of course, there are always those villains who have absolutely no motivation and “just want to watch the world burn.” – Joker from Dark Knight

Happy Halloween!

Expected Publication: November 2012

Book Blurb

In the future, only one rule will matter:

Don’t. Ever. Peek.

Seventeen-year-old Ari Alexander just broke that rule and saw the last person she expected hovering above her bed — arrogant Jackson Locke, the most popular boy in her school. She expects instant execution or some kind of freak alien punishment, but instead, Jackson issues a challenge: help him, or everyone on Earth will die.

Ari knows she should report him, but everything about Jackson makes her question what she’s been taught about his kind. And against her instincts, she’s falling for him. But Ari isn’t just any girl, and Jackson wants more than her attention. She’s a military legacy who’s been trained by her father and exposed to war strategies and societal information no one can know — especially an alien spy, like Jackson. Giving Jackson the information he needs will betray her father and her country, but keeping silent will start a war.

My Interview With Melissa West

Tell us a little about you : )
Let’s see. Boring stuff or interesting stuff? I’m married with a daughter and another on the way. I have an M.S. in Graphics and have worked for years in the printing/publishing industry. I am incredibly picky about the things I like, and incredibly cool about everything else. And secretly, I’m terrified of aliens.

How did you come up with the idea/concept for Gravity?
Really it was the combination of a storm outside that caused the trees to move in this creepy rhythmic pattern and a dream that night about what might come out of those trees. :)

How long did it take to write?
Three months to write and another two to edit.

Do any of the characters remind you of anyone you actually know?
Ari is a lot like me, if I’m honest—both her good and bad traits. She’s tough on the outside, sensitive on the inside, which is very me. :)

Which actors do you see playing the main characters?
Megan Fox for Ari and Taylor Kitsch for Jackson.

Are there any messages that you want your readers to see? What is that?
This is a tricky question. I try to avoid writing stories that preach, but GRAVITY, at root, is about how we handle what is different.

If you can tell us, what is the next book in the series going to be like?
*Smiles* Book two is GRAVITY on steroids. It’s much more intense and really pushes Ari and Jackson in ways they never imagined. There are new characters (though the old are still there as well, of course), new settings, etc. It’s been a blast to write. :)

Other Qs

When did you first realize that you wanted to become a writer?
About two or three years ago. I have always loved writing, though I never focused on writing as a hobby or a career. Finally, a few years ago I decided to write a book and became hooked. Now, I can’t imagine not writing.

How has being a Debut Author been like?
It’s been amazing. The YA community, both authors and readers, have been so wonderful. I joined the Apocalypsies and “met” lots of other debut authors, all so supportive. And then I adore the Entangled Teen group. The publishing world is stressful! It’s nice to have a support system of people who help cushion the craziness. :)

Is there a place you ultimately like to write?
I can write anywhere, but I prefer to be alone in a quiet room. I find I write best sitting in my bedroom glider.

For Aspiring Authors, do you have any advice for them?
Read. Lots. Writing is a natural ability. I truly believe that. But it is also something that must be cultivated, and the two best ways to strengthen your writing is to write—a lot—and to read even more.

Which Authors are your most favorite?
I’m a big Jane Austen and Madeleine L'Engle fan. I also adore Libba Bray.

What are you currently reading and if you are not reading anything at the moment, is there a Novel you are just waiting to read?
I just finished THE UNBECOMING OF MARA DYER and really liked it. I like anything creepy and that book is full of creepy moments! I plan to read ALL THE BROKEN PIECES by Cindi Madsen next.

What is your All Time Favorite Film that you basically have all the lines memorized to?
The Wizard of Oz

Are you looking forward to a specific film that is coming soon in theaters?
Coming soon? Not really. But I can’t wait to see Catching Fire.

Lastly, since it’s almost Halloween, if you celebrate it, do you have a favorite tradition?
I’m a mom, so I LOVE Halloween. My favorite tradition is probably carving the pumpkin with my husband and daughter. It’s become quite a big thing in our house.

*Thank you again for answering my Qs!*

Review
(Thank you to the Publisher for providing an ARC)

It's been a short while since I've read a Science Fiction Read, and I really enjoyed Gravity. This story was captivating and I felt sucked in it. We are transported far into the future and are introduced to 17 year-old Ari who is part of a Military Legacy and basically her life is planned for her, by her Parents. Basically she's going to be the next Commander, and marry the future President of their Country, Lawrence. What she does not expect though, is to have a mere distraction, a threat to that plan, and that's Jackson. She's wondering what? Why? Huh? Why is this guy, who all right, is one popular guy at school, interested to get to know her better, want her help? Well things get tricky when these two work together to, as Jackson mentions that she must help him or people will die, but what gets in the way are their intense feelings for each other and secrets get out, and they threaten a lot of people, so now things get really complicated in Ari's oh so planned life.

This is a Debut Novel, and it's such a good one! The Author has wonderful writing skills, and there was just a great flow that makes you turn the pages. I got good indications on what the characters were like, so character development was pretty nice. I liked Ari, and enjoyed reading from her POV. She's a strong female character that knows how to throw a punch, as we read throughout the story, and in addition there are good action scenes here. Jackson is definitely a secretive and mysterious character, his secrets do get out, so prepare yourself! I felt the emotions and feelings that Ari was experiencing, especially when she's falling for Jackson, and I think the mysterious sides gets the better side of Jackson and I think it's understandable because of what he's hiding, but I hope to read more about his feelings towards Ari in the second book, which I'm definitely looking forward to because I think the ending was a really good one, that sets you up to make your own predictions about what's going to happen next, so I can't wait! :)

My Rating: 4.3/5
I say a PG-13 Rating!

Piper Shelly's Guest Post
(Thank you so much for sharing your Post!)

You’re a writer? Then you better choose wisely!

Hello everyone, and thanks to Marissa for giving me this little space today so I can talk to you. I’ve given tons of interviews in the past few weeks, and it’s nice for a change to just write free from the heart without answering why I chose to become an author or what my weirdest writing quirks are. ;-)

For today, I picked something from my everyday life with my husband. And that’s also why I went with this strange title. In my case, I’ve chosen The Perfect.

Some of you are ardent readers, who love to submerge in a book for days, without thought about the rest of the world as it moves on without you. Some of you are writers, who, like me, love to do the very same. Only, we spend way more time with the same book than our readers do. While it takes you about two days to read an average novel, we toil on it for a solid year. And not just an hour a day or two. Nah-uh. I remember days in my life where I got up at five in the morning, booted up my laptop, opened my WIP, and before I knew it, it was midnight, I hadn’t had breakfast, and my hair still looked like I’d just climbed out of bed. I’m sure my husband remembers those days too…

He’s a wonderful man, a great father to our son, and very caring. He knows how to fix everything around the house. He’s perfect. But there’s one more special reason why I love him. He accepts me, the author, which is a very hard thing for most non-writers to accept, when we tend to exist in an alternate world too. When we started dating, I had no idea I was going to be an author one day. That wish came later in our relationship, and it was a hard time for both of us to get used to as there were days where I suddenly didn’t have much time for him anymore. I changed. In the beginning—and I know that for a fact—he often wished I’d kick my laptop out the window and become the person I used to be when we met. But that wasn’t going to happen. Instead I worked on making him see just how important writing was for me. There were days in my life where I curled up on the sofa, crying, just because I thought I wasn’t good enough to ever get my book published. I tend to get depressive when I can’t write because of this darn thing called writer’s block. And when I have to take a mandatory break from writing because we’re on vacation or anything like that, I start behaving like a heavy smoker gone cold turkey. My novels are to me what drugs are to an addict. And believe me it’s not easy to live with an addict. Basically—with any writer. That I’m still married and my husband kisses me every morning before he leaves for work just shows how tolerant he is. With any other guy, I know I wouldn’t have lasted through the planning stages of my novel. But he hung in there with me during the entire project, and I know I can rely in him, no matter what lies ahead. Why? Because he knows me, and he chose to stay anyway.

I hope you understand now why, for a writer, it is so important to choose the right partner. I told you, I’ve chosen the best, even though I didn’t know it at that time. ;-)
And now, the promised snipped from my everyday life.

It was Sunday morning, and we had work to do in the garden. My husband got out of bed, dressed, and walked downstairs. I promised to be there in a minute as well. But then I found this blank spot on the wall where my eyes focused, and I began daydreaming about my current novel. I went through the last scene I’d written and let my mind wander, shaping the next chapter. Vaguely I noticed the noise drifting up from our garden, where my husband was busy working. But as per normal when I get submerged into my stories, the world outside me stopped to exist. It just happens. For all my husband knew, I could have been up and preparing breakfast, doing whatever someone does in the morning. But he knew better… He didn’t even come back into the house to check. He just stood underneath our bedroom window and shouted, “Honey, stop writing already and get out of bed!”

Cheers ;-)
Piper

Short Excerpt

He was so infuriating, and I was absolutely not charmed…okay, maybe just a little…

“Hi,” he said with a compassionate look that made me wish the traitor, Quinn, had taken off those damn handcuffs so I wouldn’t look like a complete idiot.
Lips pressed together, my fingers waggled in a feeble greeting. The mere sight of him sent a quiver of excitement to my stomach.
He nodded his chin at my tied hands. “They seem rather uncomfortable.”
And they bloody well were, but I shrugged it off like it was nothing unusual. “The latest fashion. You heard the judge, I wear them quite often.”
A teasing smile played around his lips that spiked my blood pressure. “Shall we take them off?” he said.
He must be kidding. “Unless you’ve got teeth like a hacksaw, I don’t see how that would work.”
Grin widening, he pulled out a key-ring from his pocket. He squatted, leveled his eyes with mine, and shook the ring in front of my face. The friendly jingle of metal filled the high hallway.
My mouth sagged open. “Where did you get these from?”
“Chief Madison.”
“You stole them from Quinn?” I pulled my hands reflexively out of his reach.
“Of course not.” The blond god gave me a pointed look. “I asked for them.”
“Quinn wouldn’t unshackle me when I asked him to.”
His intense blue eyes locked with mine. “I had to solemnly swear to keep an eye on you. Now hold still.” Cool fingers curled around my wrist to fix my hand while he unlocked the first cuff. Sparks tingled on my skin, my hand trembled slightly.
With a click, the other cuff came off. I flexed my hands and rubbed my burning wrists.
“Better?” He tilted his head and arched one beautiful brow.
My head bobbed, but I found no breath to answer.
“Okay then.” He used my knees to push himself up and stretched to his full height.
He probably expected a thanks following his selflessness. My gaze focused on the ripped hems of his jeans, my lips remained sealed.
When he turned on his heel and marched off to the left, I glanced up. “And now you’re going where?” The words shot out before I could stop myself.
“Bathroom break.” His arched brows dared me to object.
My lower lip threatened to pop from between my teeth as I chewed on it. Don’t speak! “But you’re supposed to keep an eye on me.”
After studying me for a couple of seconds, his expression softened even more. “You’re not going to get me into trouble.”
I let him take another stride away from me. Two. Three. Four. “How can you be so sure?” Shut the hell up, Jona. “After everything you know about me, I’ll probably be gone when you get back.”
A shrug of one shoulder and his beguiling smile struck me silent. “I trust you.”

Review
(Thank you to the Author For The Review Copy!)

This was a wonderful story; I absolutely loved it! I believe Her Game, His Rules was very deep, meaning there were many emotions felt by the main character, Jona. We first meet her stealing a sweater with one of her not so trusted friends. Getting in trouble like this, is the norm for 17 year old Jona. This time when she goes to court (again, another norm for her) instead of spending time in jail, she is to spend the next six weeks with...her Mother. Now, since about the age of five, Jona has lived in an orphanage. She has had a huge distaste towards her Mother because she believes she was just left, abandoned, someone to not worry about ever again, so it's not a friendly reunion when Jona sees her Mom, Charlene, again. But, what Jona does see standing beside Charlene is a younger looking man, who seems to belong with Charlene in some peculiar way, so Jona is curious and intrigued by this guy, Julian, at the same time. Anyway, Jona is taken by Charlene and her...? hmmm well Julian and they go to France to stay with Jona's Aunt and Uncle, people, family she did not know she had; another reason to loathe Charlene. Jona knows it's going to be a tough 5-6 weeks, living with all these strangers, including her Mother, oh I mean Charlene, and she is just waiting for the perfect opportunity to run away, but for some reason, it's not Charlene's horrible illness that keeps Jona from staying...it's this close developing friendship between she and Julian, and she does not know what this...feeling could be...it's a feeling you are just going to have to read for yourself, and believe me, this is one Novel that I feel, must be read!

Now, I truly loved the writing. The Author did a wonderful job in writing the different characters because through their dialogue and given personality, they just seemed so believable. Jona, aww I really liked her. She has been through a tough young life, and the feelings of being abandoned, unloved, and more just really grabbed me so I felt for her. Those feelings can be relatable, and other feelings she experiences through the story, are sometimes new to her, so it was great to read the new experiences she faces. Julian...Oh my Words. He was written really well! I feel you just have to read this to get the feel of this hot, kind, but oh so mysterious Angel. He is definitely a catch, and he and Jona's hmm relationship... just felt natural and sweet, but you will also feel the angst at times, and I almost felt a couple tears threatening to come down, because there are some heart breaking moments, but it's all worth it, and you'll see when you read it. This is one Novel not to miss! :)

My Rating: 4.8/5
I say a Strong PG-13 Rating (Some Language 16-17+)

About The Author
Did you know that this word scares me more than anything? About… Wherever you go, people want you to tell what a cool life you lead just because you’re an author. But really, there’s nothing special to say about me, except maybe that I write a little more than others normally do. I married my teenage-love, we do our best to raise our ten-year-old to a kind and caring young man, and my cat loves to sleep in my bed, forcing me to bend to the strangest positions at night, just so she can sprawl comfortably on the blanket. I like pizza. And occasionally I talk to angels, but seriously, in these times, who doesn’t…?

So all in all, I dare say I’m leading a pretty normal life.

Of course it will all change the day my book follows the act of Harry Potter, and I’ll become richer than the Queen. I swear I’ll never again clean my windows myself then. Yeah, one day, ha ha…
