Writer’s block: the vaccination you’ve been looking for

Writer’s block gives me a headache not even a shopping spree or an evening at my favorite sushi bar can cure.

Ever since starting the second novel to Superheroes Wear Faded Denim, I have been dealing with this illness.

My main character is all enigmatic. I do not understand him. This lack of connection stifles the scenes. Struggling to figure out my main character, I’ll stop writing for a whole week.

I suffered without hope for months. Then I stumbled upon a vaccination, allowing me to form an adaptable immunity. This so happened to be free writing in the first person voice of my character. Gritting my teeth and just allowing the words to pour past my fingertips finally allowed me to gain control of my process.

The first drafts of my scenes are always hideous, but at least I have something to work with. I can go back to create sharper dialogue, add bits of setting, or do whatever I need to do in order to quiet the editor inside of me.

The key though is to tell your inner- editor to “hush up!” while free writing. You have to write as if the brakes have been ripped out of your BMW, and you’re shooting down I-75 going 100 mph.

Believe me this discovery is way better than staring frustrated at a screen as white as tissue.
To get the most out of my free writing, I have an end in mind.

Anyone heard of Syd Field? He is a successful film giant and industry know-all when it comes to plotting.

When constructing the skeleton to his films, Field says he writes the main events he wants to occur in his story line on index cards. Then he rearranges them around to his liking.

It is a great treat to all the writers who loathe outlining.

To me, outlining and character development is a necessary evil. Otherwise there would be plot holes big enough to hide buried treasure in my manuscripts.

Before I ever sit down to write a draft, I try to write a full page in each of my main character’s point of view.

I answer questions like: who are his family? What are his favorite movies? If he had a theme song, what would it be? What are his hobbies? What is his height? Hair color? Does he have a love life?

Then I outline the main plot points of my novel.

This extra preparation allows me to not only free write with purpose, but complete the first draft of my novel in under a year.

Synopsis

Blissany Cherry is tired of sleeping around. Her neurologists’ sleep solutions have failed her. Now that her bizarre sleeping habits have begun to include week long dreams she has resorted to her own methods for a cure.

METHOD ONE: CONTROL DREAMS. All attempts to morph dreams about a gorgeous warrior into romantic fantasies are thwarted. He keeps on insisting she is destined to marry a great king and lead their armies into war. At the end of every dream he asks her: will you fight the war and save mankind?

She laughs in his face.

METHOD TWO: RESIST! Blissany has plans for her life. None include fighting an intergalactic war.  When her dreams begin spilling over into reality, she is forced to make a decision that will forever redefine her life. Standing between destiny and desire, she is left with only one option.
METHOD THREE: SURVIVE.

Review

This was a very creative and well written story. The story itself deals with regular college life: roommates, classes, and social stuff; then there's the fantasy side, dealing with a war, saving mankind, and uncertain what to do when dreams actually become reality. The story along with the characters was very entertaining. We read from different POVs, including Blissany's, so we see this story from all sorts of sides. This was a good novel that had suspense, jealousy, romance, and destiny. It is definitely one that should not be missed, and I encourage you read it! :)

My Rating: 4/5
My Audience Rating: PG-13

About The Author
Law Reigns has an odd obsession with romance. At the advice of her friends, she gave up the plight of playing cupid in their lives. Developing her own characters to manipulate proved to be more rewarding. After having studied creative writing at the University of Florida, she decided to write Superheroes Wear Faded Denim. A proud Gator alumni, she based  her novel where blood runs orange and blue. She personally invites all adventure druggies and love fanatics to dive into the pages of Faded Denim, a story that transforms a swampy, southern town into a battlefield for life and love.

Why this story:

I wrote this story for three reasons:

As a narcoleptic, I wanted to inspire others by writing a story about a character who struggles to overcome sleep. Harriet Tubman’s story inspired me. For those who do not know, she was also a narcoleptic. She most certainly did not let it bother her. Anyone who faces obstacles in life will be inspired by this story of triumph.

Telling the story of a young woman who had to undergo a transformation to achieve greatness was important to me. Life will always ask more of us, more than we sometimes even think we can give.

I wanted to capture the beauty and culture of my college experience. There are so many different types of people we meet in college. Many stories do not even try to convey this.
