Book Description
(From Goodreads)

In 10th century France, 18-year old Cherine Cadet only knows one thing: that the life of a peasant isn’t a life at all. Tired of working in utter poverty for an unfeeling Lord, with only her indifferent family and love-struck best friend as company, Cherine dreams of the day she can run away from the future set-up for her, even if she knows there’s no real escape from her destiny.

Then, in one brutal instance, everything changes. A Viking fleet led by the powerful nobleman and warrior, Rolf the Walker and his right-hand man, Erik the Axe, arrive on the shores of the Lord’s estate. In minutes, the entire land is up in flames, Cherine’s family and fellow serfs are killed, and Cherine comes dangerously close to death herself. She is saved only by the fierce Erik – but a new lease on life comes with a cost.

Cherine becomes a slave to the Vikings, a fate she thinks is no better than the one she had before. But as she finds herself being shared between the two men, the savage and darkly handsome Rolf and the mysterious and sensual Erik, Cherine discovers that she too has a fiery warrior heart and that the flames that consumed her old life might burn them all to the ground.
***Rated 18+ for graphic sexual content***

Author Bio

Emma MacKenzie is the alter ego of a somewhat successful indie author. Though she tries hard to hide it, the truth is she got her start in writing by penning cheesy romantic comedy screenplays. Though she has seven published novels under her garter belt, this is her first foray into erotic romance. Considering how big of a pervert she is, it probably won't be her last.

My Review

This story surrounds an 18 yr. old peasant girl, Cherine, and two strong male warriors, Rolf and Erik. Rolf and Erik are Vikings and basically take siege over the small village where Cherine and her family live. She is the only one that survives and at first hates Erik, as she is then a prisoner to the Vikings. Rolf, though, who is like the leader of this Viking Clan, wants Cherine to himself one day, and wants Erik to make Cherine ready for him, and at first she doesn't want to be near any Viking, so being near Erik is not different, but somehow, she notices that he is actually kind to her and even though Erik has orders to 'sexually break' Cherine, he finds himself actually caring for her, and they enter a short and dangerous sexual relationship that might have more feeling than they thought they can ever give, but when it's Rolf's time to be with her, things change, and Cherine learns that being a possible duchess and wife to Rolf, might not be what she wants, and there might be friction that overshadows any happiness and freedom that Cherine always wanted.

I had not read an erotic in a while, and I don't think I've ever read one that was set in the 10th Century. This story though had a great outline of events, that I was reminded that this story is set so long ago, but with certain intimate situations, I forgot, at times, that these characters are from a century, so long ago. The location described, and some of the dialogue, seemed very believable, and I felt, well, that I was taken to an old setting in France. There were sex scenes, oh yes there were, but I thought that there were not as much, but there were just enough for this story, if that makes sense, so anyway...lastly, I think I liked the way this story ended, but I feel like because of a shocking and quick indecent, that maybe I knew was coming, but when it actually happened, it sorta threw me off, and I felt the story ended maybe too soon as I wanted to know just a wee bit more about one character, but overall this was a very good erotic romance historical read.

My Rating: 4.2/5
NC-17 Rated (Strong Sex Scenes & Violent Content) (18+)

  1. 10th century France is an uncommon era/setting to write in (especially for characters that aren't some sort of royalty). What made you choose it?

  2. WoW! Love the overview, now I want to read it right now! I really enjoy reading books that are that far back in history. It makes for a more interesting story for one. And I also get to know more about that part of history and learn new things I might not have known already. I also appreciate all the research that the author had to do for that part of the century.
I have a question: How long does it usually take for you to do all the research for that century? Also, How do you come up with the names of your characters in that period of time? Can you even find that info on the internet?
Thank you for letting me ask you some questions.

  5. This sounds like an intriguing story and I imagine that it took a fair amount of research to give sufficient background. Thanks for the review and for the giveaway.

  6. I always wondered how one has enough courage to enter the erotic fiction genre. It's like exposing for public display the most private (and perverted :P) parts of your brain. So my questions are.. How do you decide to enter this genre? Is it harder than writing non-erotic stories?
Thanks for the awesome giveaway! :)
